Grocery shopping is a necessary evil that has become a part of every average household’s routine. And with rising food prices, it is fast becoming a major cost category in the monthly household budget. Yet, it doesn’t have to be. Stock up on the six tips below to execute smart grocery shopping with military-like precision.
- Make a list of items you need and stick to it - don’t go chasing the ‘on sale’ items or pick up the set of fifty Energizer batteries at the checkout line. These are impulse buys best left to fools.
Don’t go to the grocery store on an empty stomach. The store will try to tempt you any way by the many goodies available for purchase, and a growling stomach can make sticking to a shopping list next to impossible.- Try the store brand - lower priced and often just as good (if not better) as the branded stuff; plus store brands prevent epileptic attacks.
- Don’t go coupon crazy - it’s a dreadful way to spend a Sunday. Instead, after you have prepared your list, just scan the papers to find if any of the items are on the list. Don’t be a fool and spend the weekend cutting up the entire newspaper when you could be outside enjoying quality time with your family.
- Don’t bulk up if you’re not sure you need it. It’s only cheaper if you use the entire jumbo-size box; not if you have to throw a half-full box because it went bad.
- Say no to impulse buys. These are the items at the checkout line that often get left off grocery lists. Stores are counting on you to pick these up - one last item to sell you before you leave. Decide whether you really need these items before leaving the house, or you’ll end up purchasing batteries in all size and quantities.
